This collection of vintage matchboxes is a family collection I share with my youngest sister, Allison, who is a Junior in high school. For her 16th birthday, my mom thought a unique gift would be a jar of vintage match-books because Ally has always been interested in vintage pieces, a trait we both get from our mother. Once my sister opened up her present, I knew that I was going to be the annoying older sister who now wanted a collection of my own.
As a graphic designer, vintage matchboxes are incredibly inspiring to me, and their existence speaks to the designers of the past, who were making these interesting choices for color palette, layout, illustration, and type - all my favorite parts of the design. There's something so intentional about how every square inch is used—how form and function come together in such a small object. The collection first started as a birthday gift, but now it serves as a tangible piece of my sister's and my shared history and relationship.
